Coming to the end.....

We are now sitting in our hotel room close to the Malpensa Airport for our flight home tomorrow.  This truly has been such a great experience.  Even though the two of us have been living in tight quarters for the last two weeks - just today on the drive here, we were reflecting that we never - not even once got on each others nerves!  I believe that is because we both needed this trip to rejuvinate ourselves and our souls!  That has happened for both of us.

Mollie's last blog covered Rome and Venice - both were wonderful experiences.  I wanted to add my repeated feelings about Venice.  Every time I leave this city I tell myself "I probably won't be back"  and yet everytime I go there I am amazed at how much I love it.  I tried to explain to Mollie what it is like to wake up in Venice with the sounds of the city coming to life.  It is just something that I have never experienced anywhere else - the church bells, the boats, the people all create a song or melody that is just simply Venice.  There is an energy in the city that gives me energy.

It was a bit different in Piaza San Marco - which is where all of the pidgeons are, as they have outlawed the feeding of the birds and they are leaving the square.  While it is fun to watch people react to the birds - I must say that I didn't mind not fighting them for our lunch!

Today the weather finally caught up with us.  We had planned to have a very relaxing day by the pool and then spa treatments in the afternoon.  When we woke up - we were in the middle of a rainstorm that was clearly not leaving anytime soon, so I threw an option to Mollie.  Skip the spa treatments and go to Verona, which you may recognize as the home of Romeo and Juliet.  I have driven past Verona three times and have always wanted to stop, but never had time.  This was our time!  We located the tomb of Juliet, which was oddly hauntingly peaceful.  We were also able to find her family home and yes - that famous balcony!  Aside from all of the hubbub of the two lovers, Verona is a lovely little city that I would definatley put on my list of places to stay and discover more fully.

I was a little disappointed that we could not see the countryside on our drive to Malpensa literally because of the rain.  I actually felt compelled to slow down to about 80 and stay in the slow lane on the autostrada!  We had entered into the Toscana region again briefly on the way to the airport, which remains my favorite of all of Italy.  As we were driving from Rome to Montegrotto Terme several days ago I once again felt myself being torn from this area that I love.  Italy is not home to me, but there is definately a part of my heart here, and I tend to get a bit weepy, knowing that it will be several years before I am back.  The good news with that is I always look forward to the planning and the new discovery of places.  I have been so lucky to have made this trip with different loved ones in my life and I know that I will continue to do that as this lovely country is a place to be shared with people - especially those you love.

As I have done with each trip I have made ,I have journaled the experience and once again - I will close with the ten things that I have learned on this journey....

1.Before anything else – remember to thank you parents – if they have provided you with a great travel partner in a sibling!

2. Laughing with my sister in a double bed is a much better workout that anything I could do at the gym.

3. Gelato is to be used at least once daily…for medicinal purposes only.

4.  Maps in general should be used as a guide – not a direction.

5. U-turns on the road and in life can be costly.

6. Lemoncillo should never be mistaken for lemonaid

7. Retracing the steps taken with others can be a good thing.

8. Tears shared with a sister are always good, no matter what.

9. While you can fall in love with faraway places, it is never as deep as the love you have waiting at home.

10. Embrace the curves in the road. Like life – they can be scary, but around the corner – there is always another beautiful view...

And with that Dear Readers...we say goodby to Bella Italia, with fondness and the certainty that there will be another journey...

The Worcester Sisters

We have some 'splaining to do

Ok people have written that we haven't updated in a couple days and I, Mollie---the younger Worcester sister--, take full responsibility.  That said if my big sister were watching over me as a good big sister should she would tell me to step away from the Lemoncello.  I tell you people this is better than crack (or as i imagine crack to be since having never tried it).  But man does it pack a punch!

So there's my explanation and now on with what you're really here for---the update.  Rome was simply indescribable.  I can not find the words to express what it was like standing in a monument (the Coliseum) that was constructed in 80AD.  Aside from the coliseum there were buildings and ruins strewn throughout this fabulous city that were nothing short of spectacular.  One thing amongst, all the other landmarks, that we HAD to find was "The Mouth of Truth".  This was the spot where Gregory Peck took Audrey Hepburn in the movie "Roman Holiday" (Laura's and my all time favorite movie) and told her the statue would bite her hand if she were lying.  Great scene!

I think Laura enjoyed my gaping jaw expression throughout the day as we came upon each new monument.  She had been to Rome previously and new somewhat of what we would be seeing so she was happy to see my reactions.

We only had one day in Rome so we squeezed a lot in.  The following day was a driving day to Montegrotto Terme.  My sister has been doing the vast majority of the driving--total rock star about it, she's been doing great---this was our last time to see the Toscana region as we drove through it, but I have to admit I actually slept through it (see note about Lemoncello above).

We get to our hotel after about 4hrs on the road and it is spectacular.   Hotel Eliseo in the heart of Montegrotto is a wellness spa and the rooms are quite spacious.  we even had our own little twin beds though I must say sleeping with my sister again after all these years has been a blast, we just laugh ourselves to sleep.  I didn't have too much seperation anxiety as only an inch seperated the beds.

We got to the hotel around 2pm and it was beautiful out so we decided to indulge ourselves and go layout by their "Theraputic pool".  I get in whilst my sis made a few phone calls.  i noticed right away that people seemed to be staring at me.  Certain that they have never seen seen a vision such as myself (after checking to ensure everything was where it was supposed to be) I continued in to the pool and over to the jets for a water massage.  It wasn't until my sister joined me that she made the keen observation we were the only people in the pool without swimcaps.  Man were getting the stinkeye.  In our defense no one gave us these stupid little head thingys and they weren't being handed out at the cabana.  How were we to know the protocol?  Well as it turns out, we discovered later that we were supposed to have paid to use the pool, which is where I suppose the rules and proper gear were given.  Oopsy for the Worcester Sisters!

Nice dinner in Montegrotto and we decide to hit the hay early (no wine, beer OR Lemoncello) as we were headed to Venenzia (Venice) the following day.  After about as much CNN and news about the Pakistan floods (not to say we aren't sympathetic to this horrific event) we both checked our emails and drifted swiftly to slumber.

This brings us to Wednesday 8/4/2010.  Heading to Venice.  We drove to the ferry landing, about an hour from Montegrotto, and caught the passenger ferry over to this little piece of Italian paradise.  Coming upon it by boat was fabulous as we passed some cool ruins on another little island.  I could not believe the architecture.  Of course I've been impressed with every place I've seen, but there iis something very sweet about Venice.  I was struck with the dichotomy of Luis Vuitton, Hemes, Bruno Magli and other such high end brands nestled down underneath some of the oldest buildings. Great picture taking opp.  We did alot of walking and a little shopping.  Had a lovely lunch and wouldn't you know Lemoncello was everywhere!  Had a couple beers followed by this delectable Lemony concoction and feeling pretty good we walked some more.  We enter the Piazza San Marco which was simply extraordinary. As luck would have it they had several little bars with concerto's playing so naturally we had to stop.  This is where things took a turn for me. I don't know how many Lemoncello's I had, but suffice it say it was one (or two) too many.  I was fine until I stood up, then---not so much.  Walking did me good.  We came upon a Gondelier stand and decided it would be a great treat to see Venice via the canal.  AMAZING.

We had a cute little 22 yo Gondelier who was third generation in this vocation.  He was just darling telling us all about the boat, it's upkeep and of course pointing out many wonderful historic places along the canal.  Great experience and while I am sure this is meant to be a romantic adventure I was quite happy to be experiencing this with my sister, just as I have been in sharing this entire trip with her.

We have laughed (alot), we have cried (a little) and everything in between. We have just been enjoying being together as sisters and as women.  While our Italian journey is winding down, our life journey continues!

Stay tuned....

Buengiorno from Roma!!

We made it to Rome yesterday!  Our drive was fairly uneventful, if you don't count the $60 ticket we got for not passing through a toll station. I really don't think it was our fault, but clearly, was not going to argue.  We were on the Grande Ritourno which is essentially one big round about that encircles the city of Rome.  We had been on it for about an hour, and continued to "spit" ourselves off, but on the wrong exits.  We finally decided to just start over at exit one, which in theory was a great idea.  We started following the mapquest directions, which seemed to be working, until we found ourselves out of the city and headed to Firenze.  Not good.  I am certain that most of you have heard the phrase "all roads lead to Rome".  I am certain that applies to every road with the exception of the one that we happened to be on!  I told Mollie to look for any sign that said Rome!  We took a turn off and low and behold - there was a sign, but it was behind us, so we did what any intellgent gals would do...pulled a u-turn!  What should have been about a $2 dollar fare, turned into $62!  Imagine our surprise! Oh well, it was worth it as it got us back in the right direction and once again, after some great navigation we stumbled on our hotel!  Unfortunately when we got here, they did not have our reservation, but were able to get a room for us!

After a quick shower and snack - we ventured out into the city.  We had decided to go to the Trevi Fountain the first evening, as it is so beautiful at night!  The fountain did not disappoint.  It was beautiful.  The were throngs of people as expected, but we had a great time.  We went to dinner at a small restaraunt where we had one of our best meals yet, as well as a couple of really nice bottles of wine, and fun conversation with a couple from Belgium.  Once again we had a mixture of langauges, but were able to communicate.

We got back to the room and had a very sound sleep!  Today, we got up and did the "big bus" tour which is a perfect way to see some of the important highlights of Rome if you have limited time.  We started of with the Coliseum, where we took a guided tour.  So interesting!  These structures are not only beautiful, but they truly are architectural wonders. We road the bus for most of the day getting on and off where and when we wanted to see more, or spend additional time in a particular location.  Our only disappointment was at the Vatican.  We have been carrying wraps with us for the entire trip just in case we wanted to go into a church - with the exception of today.  So after waiting in line for about 45 minutes, going through security and making it all of the way to the entance, we were turned away because we were both wearing tank tops.  Oh well...

Today also turned out to be the hottest day that we have had, and we are both a bit sun burnt, but we are not complaining! We have been blessed with glorious weather.  Tomorrow we are heading out to Montegrotto Terme which will be the most northern part of our trip.  We will have one long day in Venice and the remaining time will be spent relaxing in Montegrotto Terme hopefully hitting some thermal spas!

Until our next post!

Ciao from Roma

A Day in Sorrento

Yesterday we decided to sleep in a little bit and then head up to Sorrento proper to do a little shopping and exploring of the city.  We took the bus up ($2.00 compared to $12.00 for the cab) and took a good long walk through the small alleys.  It is so fun to look down the streets at the different doorways, decorated with flowers and plants.  I always wonder who lives behind the doors.  What are the families like?

We actually started going into some of the high end stores to do a little "shopping".  It was fun to see some of the other shoppers who clearly are not on a budget of any kind to speak of.  As in Capri - we saw people dropping a whole lot of money!  Who says there is an economic crisis?

We did stop at one shoe store where we both scored - Mollie bought some sandles I managed to find a pair of boots that I feel in love with!  After shopping we decided to sit and people watch a bit!

We walked a while up to the main piazza (square) of Sorrento and sat for a while.  We had the good fortune of being able to see a bit of a wedding that was going on at the church across the street.  My gosh - do they dress to the nines!     Afterwords we headed back down to the marina  to rest for the evening events that we thought was going to be a festival, but alas, we had missed it by a week.  Instead we went to have dinner at one of the places in the marina.  That ended up being an event in and of itself.  The waiter (Alfonso) took a liking to us and was helping us order.  He offered us the lobster and pasta to which I had to explain, "only if it doesn't come with it's head still on".  He quickly regrouped and told us he would have the cook make something special for us.  We ended up with a very good pasta with some kind of fish in a tomatoe sauce. When I asked for cheese to put on top, we thought he was having a heart attack - I was a little worried that he was going to take our dishes away!
We went without the cheese and the meal was terrific!

After dinner we went to our gellato spot for a night cap of chocolate chip cones!  Once we got up to the room we started hearing the booms of fireworks and to our delight, there was a fireworks show going on...for the wedding probably.  We went up to the sun terrace to watch them, and placed against the lovely Sorrento evening - they were beautiful!  Imagine our luck!  Once again - the magic of this country takes over and makes each day eventful no matter what we are doing
.
Tomorrow we are on to Rome... for me this is a great stop no matter what!  I am certain that Mollie will enjoy it as well!

Back to the age of Technology

Just got to Rome where we are re-connected to the internet so we have a couple of days to catch up on.  Starting with Friday 7/30/10 when we went to the Island of Capri. We get off the ferry and shopped a little around the landing then saw signs to Centro. Off we went to find the Centro. It ended up being about a mile straight up in 90 degree weather but we were proud of ourselves for doing it. Of course one of the motivating factors was the knowledge that our parents had done it not so long ago, so we simply couldn’t punk out. Did a little shopping up top, but more window shopping and picture taking then anything. The stores were amazing. A lot of high-end merchandise. Lunch time rolled around and we found a cute little cafĂ© where we shared a delightful meal, beer followed by Limoncello (we are in the region where this Lemony liquor is made). All was delicious. Laura and I have taken to splitting a caprese salad (Tomatoes, Mozzarella and Basil with olive oil) at each meal. I can not believe the flavor the tomatoes have here. I don’t know what variety they are but they are so sweet and ripe, round redness of perfection.

After lunch we each bought a couple of small souvenirs and back down the hill we went. Ok we punked out and took a cab down, which in hindsight was safest for all as the Limoncello was kicking in. Got down to the bottom and decided we would sit at an outdoor bar until our departure from this quaint place whereupon we indulged in a few more Limoncello’s. This stuff is sent straight from the lemon Gods!

The time for our ferry back to Sorrento came so we hopped on the ferry and each made it about :30 before our heads bobbed in a Limoncello induced slumber. But for the toddler who’s parents were kind enough to buy him a blow horn, it would have been a very relaxing nap.

Went back to the room cleaned up a bit and then went down to our favorite gelatto guy who runs a restaurant.  Had some fabulous minestrone and split some pasta.  We've both commented on how we need to figure out how to cook pasta al dente, it is truly delicious.

An amazing thunder and lightening storm moved in just about the time we were heading back to our room.  The lightening lit up the horizon with bolts looking like they were directly hitting Mt. Vesuvio (of Pompei fame).  It went on for about three hours and was fantastic to watch.  Another great day on our Italian adventure!

More to come...

Hello from Sorrento!

Boneserra Dear Readers,

The Sisters are coming to you from bella Sorrento!  I must apologize up front as we are at an internet cafe and the keyboard is not familiar so I may just wing it and hope that you understand.

Yesterday was a driving day that turned into an adventure (I am sure no surprise for most of you)  We started out early heading south to Sorrento and made a couple of "little stops" along the way. The first was in a walled city that I have been to several times, but of course Mollie had not.  Monteriggioni  is a classic example of a walled or forted city although very small.  I believe that the current residency there is about 40, but low and behold they have a five star hotel and one of my favorite wineries there!  There is also my favorite hidden garden so it was a fun little stop!   We hopped back in the car and drove like the little demons we are and made it all the way to Napoli when what did we see?  A sign that said "Pompei"!  Well...what are a couple of adventurous gals with nothing but time on their hands to do but turn right!  We went to the ruins and spent about an hour and a half just wandering.  I am always amazed to see what came before us and the incredible architecture that is remaining.  I will never understand how these people were able to create such magnificent structures without all of the benefits that we have today.  Clearly not enough time to see everything, but it was a nice stop and gave a taste of the ruins.

We jumped back on the Autostrada and this is where we made our first (of many) directional mistakes.  Unfortunately, we did not realize that we had jumped back on past our exit to Sorrento.  We drove for about 30 minutes and looked at each other to say - "this feels like more than 15 km".  Of course it was - so we turned around and went back through the pay station....only to somehow end up going the same direction again!  After about another 30 minutes we had the same conversation - a little like "Groundhog's Day"!  We again turned around, only this time I was so flustered I pulled right in front of the biggest Mercedes Benz truck that I have ever seen (on my side) and some sort of car on Mollie's side.  I swear - there must be someone watching over us, because I am fairly certain that the appropriate response at a time like that is not killing the car, closing your eyes and praying that you made it through!  I am still not sure that is the appropriate reaction during a time like that but it seemed to work.  I am fairly certain that as we continued on, the truck driver was not saying "have a great day", but whatever -  we were still in business.

We decided to get off the Autostrada as it had not been our friend that afternoon, and ended up on the Amalfi Coast drive, which if your nerves are already shot is not a good thing.  We finally stopped and asked a nice looking gentelman "sa dovey andiamo Sorrento?"  Of course he did.  I had to ask him to speak slowly, but did pick up the word "doppo", which for the record was not a personal reference to either of us, but rather telling us that we needed to go all the way back to Pompei!  No worries as it wasn't that far!  We got to Sorrento and finally had to ask again for directions to the hotel.  Neither of us could understand that one so we were on blind luck which low and behold worked again like magic!  A lot of that on this trip!

We were both so tired, but decided that we needed dinner so, we went down to the hotel restarant and decided to order fish dishes.  Mollie chose the king prawns and I went with the sea bass pasta.  I was giggling when I saw Mollie's plate coming with the eyes staring right up at her!  Little did I know that her hystarics were due to the entire fish sitting on my plate!  Fortuntately they did the whole deboning thing for me...Mollie - not so much!  She was a trooper though and after making friends with her prawns, we ended up truly enjoying the meal!

Today we did nothing, except for lay out in the sun on the Amalfi Coast and it was glorious!  We took naps, ate lunch, chatted, people watched and rested up for tomorrow which will be Capri and Ana Capri!  We are both looking forward to it.  Now we are off to explore the evening in Sorrento and hopefully have a little dinner- something that we don't have to introduce ourselves too!

Boneserra from the sisters until domani!

Something about last night (and then today)

So as Laura posted we had a fabulous day trip yesterday through the Chianti region, where of course we had to have some wine (and a beer for some reason).  When we got home, we cleaned ourselves up and went to have a light supper---had to make it an early night because we had a big day planned for today which I'll get to in a minute.  Well the Chianti Gods followed us back to Volterra and our "light dinner" turned in to three great bottles of wine, some cheese with honey and some crostini with different spreads on it (not so good turned out one of the spreads ended up being pureed wild boar, I knew immediately something was amiss when my glads started tingling, but I cowgirled up and ate it).  We seemed fine while sitting in the middle of the beautiful piazza a soft warm wind blowing while we knocked back our last glass, emptying bottle three.   I decided to do some drunk dialing (from Italy to the US and to Laura's friend not mine---it seemed like a great idea at the time).  As we rose to make the short jaunt back to our hotel something just got us laughing hysterically, could of been that we were two sisters of certain ages holding hands like little girls or the way people were watching us, who knows or cares reality was we were having a blast.  We get back to the hotel trying desperately to regain some semblence of composure, but that only made us laugh harder.  It was only 10:00 so we decided to do a facial mask.  Then we get the great idea that we need to take our show on the road and in full facial mask, the Chianti courage kicks in and we pull out my Flip Video camera to make our audition reel for Ellen DeGeneres.  Off to her website they went and if we have our passports revoked upon reentry to the US we'll know who to call---our parents of course!

So on to today...today was our day to go to Firenze and see the legendary statues and paintings from centuries gone by.  In a word---Breathtaking.  We've all seen pictures of "The David", but to see him in all his marble glory was truly phenomenal.  I wondered if it is something that could be recreated today, I really don't think so!  Then off to the Uffizi gallery where we were greeted by some of the most amazing works of art the world has ever known (one of my personal favorites being "The Birth of Venus").  One thing struck me profoundly and that was the fact that the frames which held these paintings were as awe inspiring as the artwork itself and yet not one single mention on who created the frames!  A big oversight in my opinion.

After we got some culture we got our shopping on.  Neither of us went crazy but we found some great deals on italian leather goods and must e & Gabanna Sunglasses.

Wiped out after the day (and preceding evening) we stopped in our little town of Volterra for a  lovely dinner and then back to our room to prepare for a big day of driving tomorrow as we head to Sorrento (no wine tonight).

Until next time,

Mollie & Laura

Driving Miss Daisy through Chianti

Today has been another beautiful day in terms of weather!  Not as hot as yesterday, but warm enough!  We did a walking tour of Volterra this morning and then set out to follow the Chianti region winery trail.  To see all of the grand old villa's is so interesting.  Some have been working vineyards for centuries and others turned into them more recently.  It is fun to see the signs of many of the Chianti's that I enjoy at home along side the road marking the vineyards.

Today we decided to venture off without the benefit of atlas or mapquest.  While fun in theory, we did need to stop and buy a map and as luck would have it the map is much more useful to us (or i should say Mollie, as she has yet to drive) except for a little bit.  She is a very good navigator!  I am feeling pretty good on the roads, although I do think I will turn it over to Mollie Andreti when we get to Rome!

We stopped in Greve for lunch which is where Jennifer, Stacey and I stayed in during our last trip.  Food was great - service, not so much.  The fun thing is that we are sharing our meals, so I don't think we have spent more than $30 for a dinner yet.  Tonight we are going to clean up and go out for a nice dinner and wine at one of the restaurants around the corner from our hotel.

We are most likely going to leave Volterra a day early to add one more day on the coast due to the heat.   We will keep you posted on that.  Tomorrow we go to Firenze to see The David and one of the most wonderful art galleries, The Uffizi.  We will spend a long day there to see as much of Florence as we can.

Ciao

Mollie and Laura

Monday July 26th

I must write to finish out our day and evening from yesterday.  Mollie explained the day, but didn't go into the detail of how we are almost able to find our way around without the precise mapquest that I did or our Italian atlas.  We find our selves usng the famous Laura Law "it feels like this direction" to which my sister generally replies "then we should go the opposite direction".  Since I have been in the drivers seat you can guess which way we go!  To our surpise it is working.  Mollie is even getting in the game and using her instinct!  Afterall whats the worst thing that could happen?  We get lost in Italy?

Last night was my night for the Andrea Bocelli concert.  What a night.  It started out with me barely catching the bus. I had assumed that they had left without me and was prepared to drive, but when I walked by there they we waiting for me! When I boarded the bus they all cheered for me!  I was sitting with a group from England and had a nice chat.  They made sure to tell me that I had better not be late when the concert was over, as they weren't waiting for me -nice!

The concert was everything that I thought it would be.  It was about 70 degrees out with a light breeze.  The setting was in a field that had been made into this ancient out door theatre.  There was completely clear with the exception of the full moon that was rising right above where Boccelli would be performing.  I swear when he took to the stage the moon shot to attention in mid sky!  The voice ringing in this field literally brought tears to my eyes - and I don't mean subtle tears - I mean Steel Magnolia tears.  I had goose bumps throughout the concert.  The orchestra and chior with him were wonderful as were some of the quest duets - all operectic with the exception of one gentleman.  To end the eveing they all did his closing song and there were big helium ballons that had some sort of candle flickering in them that were set off to go meet the moon.  A spectacluar vision. I  am so glad that I took the chance all those months ago to build a trip around this one night.  I was not dissappointed and must say that it is something that I would do all over again. The only challenge that I had was when leaving.  The concert did not end until midnight so it was very dark .I had a little map that I could barely see, so I stopped to ask 3 or 4 police men where the shuttle busses to Vollterra were.  None of them spoke any english.  By now I was tired, hungry and in a sea of non english speaking people.  I was starting to panic a little - you know like when your a little girl and get lost and can't find your parents!  Yep - that was the feeling.  I decided that I had to calm down, quit crying and put my big girl panites on or walk 37 miles to Volterra.  I literally stood still, took a deep breath and told myself to think in Italian, put my sentences in Italian first and then ask my question.  I'll be go to heck!  It worked!  I went back to the last police officer who spoke no english and asked him "Sa deimie dovey e sue autobus andare Volterra?  Within  minutes I was sitting safely on the bus for the next hour waiting for the other idiot that couldn't find it!  Much better than the option of walking!  This entire evening is an experience that will go down in my personal history as one of the great ones!

Today - we are going to explore Volterra.  As we were trying to find our parking spot the other day we ran across some etruscan ruins so we will start there and then hit some of the museums and shops.  Our hope is to continue with the physical excersise and great food!  We are finding that we are seeing just what we want to and the fun part for this first part of the trip is that I am getting to explore some old favorites with Mollie and I am looking forward to the new places we will go!

Together at last

As things tend to do for my sister and I, everything worked out after the "missed my plane" start to our journey.  I got Milan, sat down and read for a couple hours and poof as if by magic carpet, my sister Laura comes as promised.

Yesterday we spent about 5 hours driving from Malpensa Airport in Milan to Volterra where we will call home until Thursday.  A couple of directional hiccups along the way (wipe that knowing grins off your face mom & dad), but again, as always, we made it.  Got a fairly good night sleep.  We are in the tiniest of rooms, but thankfully we were given a room with the "big" bed which means we got a full twin!  Good thing we love each other.  I wish I would have had the looks on our faces captured when we realized we had to lug our baggage up 5 flights of stairs, at least I don't feel guilty about missing the gym.  Our room opens up to the cobblestoned streets of Volterra which really is lovely.  That said I did catch a creepy guy in an apartment above and opposite our room glaring directly down at us.  We both laughed at how disappointed he was going to be, but I finally just waved at him which ended the voyeurism.

Awoke to the sound of a dove cooing outside our window (I was thankful for my sister's confirmation that it was in actuality a dove making that noise...one can't be to certain with the close quarters and all).  Church bells also sounded as today is Sunday.  Incredible.

Today was spent getting to Pisa.  We are finding our way around, but they sure don't make it easy on us with signage, or lack there of, but for the journey to and fro is the adventure.  We came across an amazing field of blooming sunflowers.  Great photo opp!

Pisa was amazing.  What really struck me is while I have seen many pictures of the leaning tower I was completely unaware of the duomo and gallery structures that were connected to it.

After a couple hours in Pisa we decided to lunch back in San Gimignano.  This had some of the most spectacular views I've ever seen.  Not just in the little village itself, with all the bell towers but of the surrounding valley and its artful topography as well.

People seemed a little nicer today as well.  Yesterday we couldn't help but notice that we seemed to be getting the stink eye from a lot of people.  Of course it very could have been due to the fact that we actually stunk after our long journey by planes and then auto (well sort of, it's one of those tiny European Fiat's, we both got a little too much sun on our faces from the drive, largely because our faces were nearly plastered to the windshield.  I told Laura we were like ducks under glass).  At one of stops we couldn't help but notice flies spending a little too much time around us and not others.

What can't be captured in this blog are those true sister moments that happen throughout the day.  Our abs are getting great workouts from laughing and that was a large reason for this trip---to spend great time together in a breathtaking backdrop.

Not sure what tomorrow will bring, but we do know it will be another fun day for the Worcester Sisters!

"Hey Soul Sister"

Imagine my surprise when I hear the above ringtone (that for which I have set to my sister's number) while sitting at Logan airport realizing that it was coming in about 45 minutes in to what should have been my sister's flight to JFK where we would have our joyous reunion FINALLY.  In the time it took the two verses of the song I had a sneaking suspicion I would not be thrilled with the news I was about to get upon answering the call, but never in a MILLION years expect to hear my sister (who has been sending itineraries, books and all kinds of stuff to prepare ME for the past three months) say "I missed my  flight".  No gentle intro in to this announcement, no sugarcoating.  Just an "I missed my flight"  followed promptly by "you just keep your flights as planned, they're trying to re-book me to MIlan".  I got hung up on the word "trying", but I was not in full panic mode yet.  No that came when she said "you just go get the car and meet me in Milan".  What could possibly go wrong with that plan, I think as I'm quickly flashing back to the time when we were kids and she lost me on an elevator in San Francisco (I rode the freaking thing up and down for two hours before someone realized I was lost!)  1) I speak ZERO Italian unless "ciao and vino" count 2) I point that out to my sister who then gives me the phrases I need to get the car to which I point out how helpful that was with the exception that people to whom I would be speaking these phrases will likely be responding in Italian!!!!  She sees the issue...

As it turns out her next call is telling me that miraculously she gets a flight via Amsterdam and she will only be 2.5 hrs behind me.  I was impressed!  We decided it best for me to stay in the airport and meet her at her gate!

After the immediate crisis phase I decided to call Jenn (my niece and Laura's eldest daughter) who was my sister's ride to the airport.  I knew I'd get the full 411 from her as to how in the H-E-double hockey sticks this happened.  Two contributing factors 1) Macaroni Grill and their "Wine on the honor system" and 2) well need I really point that out?

So dear readers The Worcester Sisters are already Trippin albeit solo for the first leg.  That said we have already laughed as much as we would were we together.  See we can make a party even 3,000 miles apart.

God willing the next post will be that we have at last found one another in Milan, we'll have a car AND a gps, and off to the beginning of our Italian adventure.

Until next time--

Mollie

Blast off...

Well...not exactly! You readers might be asking yourself "what the heck is she doing?  Isn't she sitting in first class on her way to New York to meet her sister?"  Not exactly.  For the first time in my life I missed my flight!!! Can you believe it?  So here's how my morning went. Sleeping very soundly for the first time in several days (might have been because of the pasta dinner and wine last night, but who knows) when I got the " have a great trip call" at 6:00 am which is when I should have been on the plane.  Not so much...literally screamed at Jennifer (my ride to the airport) and threw on my clothes that had been carefully laid out for the last week - no shower, worse makeup ...and headed to the airport.  I am absolutely certain that my look of distress is what made the nice gal at the Delta counter (Denise) move into hyper speed...ok that's  not what happened exactly, but she did start the process of "get Laura to Milan". At  least now I don't have to feel quit as bad about me being in first class while Mollie is in coach!  It must have  been kismet for this to have happened!

So - called Mollie to let her know that I would not be meeting her in New York, and not to worry just go ahead and pick up the car, all is good.  There was a little bit of what I would call "stunned silence" on the other end of the phone.  Several reasons for that I am sure.  First - since I have been the responsible one for our entire lives togetter, I am sure she was just trying to get her head around the sentence "I missed my flight"!  Frankly I was still trying to do that as well and at the same time holding one of the phones for my new best friend Denise as she was trying to get me on another flight!  I am certain the next thought through Mollie's head was "wait a minute - she's the one that speaks Italian...now what the heck am I going to do?  I tried to explain how to ask for the car in Italian, at which point she politly pointed out that she was not happy with the circumstances and would wait patiently for my arrival!  Feel free to adlib at this point, as we are now embroiled in what was rapidly becoming a "cluster"!  Denise is trying to tell me that there is in fact no flight that would get me to New York in time for my connetion.  This is when I realized that I was not communicating clearly and took a deep breath.  I pointed out to Denise that my main objective was to get to Milan!  "Ahhhh "she says to me!  "That we can do"!

So dear readers ...I did what any card  carrying Pollyanna would do... wiped away my tears, told my  new friend Denise that I really would appreciate it if she could speed things up just a little, as I did need to get to Milan by tomorrow, handed over my credit card, uttered the words "I don't care what it costs" and waited for the Gods of good humor to take over!  It was amazing - next thing I know Denise is handing me my tickets to Amsterdam (one of my favorite airports) told me I am still in first class and it was only going to cost me six hours and $100 BUCKS!  So there you go...to all of you who might have gone down the path of doom and gloom - I say no!  Muster up your best aligator tears and march forward!  There will be a Denise there to greet you and help you along your way!

So now that I have ticket in hand and approximately 4 hours until I need to check in, I am sitting in the PDX airport having a lovely breakfast of Bloody Mary's and eggs benedict, trying to convince myself that I can actually take a shower (or spit bath) in the rest room when....it dawns on me that I am a First Class passenger!  Yes Virginia - there is a shower area in the Delta Room!  There is a Hudson News Stand right across from me where I am certain they have the neccesities to make this happen!  The stars are starting to align again and all is good with the world!  All I need to do now is find that Delta Room!  How hard can that be?  This is when I decide to once again - confirm the car rental! I  call AutoEurope and get a nice young man  (Paul) on the other end of the phone who tells me " yes Ms Law...we do have a GPS reserved for you!" Now as many of you know that is a good thing given my sense of direction, however, my concern was ...did we have a car! Please keep in mind that I have had a trying morning and one Bloody Mary as I hear him try to let me down gently and say "you didn't reserve a car". This is when I very politely informed him that I probably would not have reserved a GPS without a car! That did it and he agreed that would not have been a good idea. It was clear that he was not looking at MY reservation! We do evidently have a car (of what sorts - I don't know and don't care)!  What else could possibly go wrong?

I can only hope that the rest of this journey is as eventful as the start for me.  It is a bit humbling to once again realize that things happen, and it is how we deal with them that will impact us.  I am sure that with the two of us together - there will be many events or circumstances - large or small that will make this one of my trips of a lifetime!  It is all about how we respond and embrace the happenings that will have the lasting impressions on us.  We just have to believe in the Denises and yes Pauls of the world to help us along our way!

So I say....viaggio commence con mia sorrella!  Credo e miracales!

Ciao

Laura

The final day...

I know that Mollie is as excited as I am for this trip and I do believe that she has actually finished her packing.  (I say this at 1:21 pst)!  Timely as ever!  I have continued my "cramming" on my Italian tapes.  I know that I am feeling marginally confident, and as I have said before  - a little wine makes me much more fluent!

Rumor has it that Italy is having record tempratures right now.  Haven't had the heart to explain the lack of AC to Mollie, but I am certain that she will catch on quickly!  The good news is that the majority of our time will be spent along the Amalfi Coast (I think it is the Amalifi -but am certain there is an ocean), so there should be some relief.  Either way I am sure it will be wonderful!

So there you go...we are off!  Pictures, and video to follow along with us on our journey!

Trade my sister for wine?

And you know I think she actually would!!!  Not exactly the Under the Tuscan Sun" moment, but hey in a pinch...

So happy to learn we got a car and I am not at all complaining because Laura has been a fantastic Julie McCoy (Activity Director from "The Love Boat" for you youngins' who may be reading this.

I have to admit I am a bundle of nerves!  I simply can't believe that we will be in Italy on Saturday.  Though the adventure really starts Friday when sis and I meet up at JFK.  As we've both said we could get together literally anywhere and it would be just fine.  But as we've also said Italy is a pretty cool place for us to be together in!

My dogs know I'm getting ready to leave, they are sooooo clingy, but they have a great sitter while I'm away.

For the record I would not trade my sister for anything well maybe wine, b ut I am at a great disadvantage as she is the only of us that speaks Italian.  My bad, I'm screwed!

So...who needs a car?

As I had mentioned before I have been getting our confirmations for hotels and tickets for museums....sort of forgot about the car!  I just received a notice and of course it was wrong, but as luck would have it....they have a compact car that seats 2 and can hold 75 cubic feet of luggage. I am fairly certain that it is one of those that in a pinch - we could pick up and turn around as needed! My question now is how much is 75 cubic feet.  Not wanting to sound too stupid, I made the executive decision to just assume that it will be at least enough for my luggage!

We only have two days until "lift-off".  I am madly trying to bone up on what little Italian I know, and have been focusing on the critical phrases:  "More wine please", "where are the bathrooms", "what do you mean you don't take credit cards", "where is the hotel" and most importantly, "I really will trade my sister for another bottle"!  I think those should get us just about anywhere.

Ciao,

Laura

The planets are back in alignment

Ok so last week my sister had me worried that I might be ahead of her in the organization area as it relates to packing, but alas, she came thru and recaptured her crown!  Though I did not get the actual packing done I did at least get my clothes set out which is a HUGE accomplishment.  Now I will be able to pack and make the final determination of what goes and what stays.

I am in  state of disbelief that we are leaving this Friday.  I just can't wrap my head around the fact that this time next week I will be in Italy.  I know I'm making this sound like I'm freakin' Columbus discovering the new world, but for me this is really, really big.  The best part is that I am with my sissy for 2 straight weeks.

As she mentioned we've both had challenging times over the past two years, so now is the time to pull up the boot straps, wipe the dust off and get back to enjoying life as well as each other.

It is hard to predict what adventure awaits us in Italy, but regardless we will be there together.  And to document it this way through our blog will be a lot of fun.  My sister and I have an uncanny ability to find ourselves in unusual predicaments, when we orate our stories after the fact we lose some of the facts of the situation.  In this real time blog we will be able to capture and save the experience for later to revisit and reminisce.  And people who may be reading this will go along for the ride (God help you).

I am getting a little nervous about being away from my two dogs for this length of time, but I think I will get over that quick enough.

I just can't believe that in one week we will be blogging from Italy!

Ahh Little Grasshopper

Not to worry - as usual I was able to get my act together and finished yesterday.  The teacher has not become the student yet!  I have faith that the young one will be able to make it through the task of paring down.  I also have faith that if she doesn't she will once she finds out what a pain it is to move a boat load of luggage over cobblestones.  Perhaps I forgot to mention that the hotels we are staying do not include "doormen"!  Oh well, part of the discovery process!

I have been checking the weather and it looks like it will be perfect - highs of around 85 and lows in the mid 60's.  Another plus is that the sunflowers will be in full bloom.  I planned it this way just for Mollie as these are her favorie flower!  Felt it was the least that I could do.  I have been getting confirmations on all of the hotels and to my delight - they are all in Italian!  Now while I think I am fairly well versed in my ability to understand the langauge, one can only hope that we do in fact have a place to stay in Sorrento.  I was going to cheat and use the translator just to be sure, but...what the heck?  I say "live on the edge"!  What is the worst thing that could happen?

Truly can't believe that we are only five days from lift off.  I have been looking forward to this trip for several years.  I have had the pleasure of discovering this wonderful country in several different ways.  First with my parents and youngest daughter Stacey, which just gave me a taste of the beauty and the knowledge that I would be back.  Then with my darling Perry.  That trip was for our 20th anniversary and so much fun.  Meeting new people and discovering places together.  The last adventure was with both daughters Jennifer and Stacey and wow!  Three weeks together as mother and daughters....and friends.  Simply amazing.  I was going to make this trip alone, to "try to find myself", and as my wonderful family has gently pointed out to me - I already have.  No need to waste this adventure on deep thinking and reflection on life.  Hell no...I say let these two spirited women out on the loose to taste the adventures of Italy!  We both have had time over the last two years to do just about as much deep thinking and reflection as two people need to do.  This will be the perfect adventure to turn the pages of our books and start new chapters.  I am thrilled to be a co-author with my sis.  Of this blog, of the journey, and of our lives!

Ciao,

Laura

Not even packed in your head?

What?  Have I landed on some parallel universe where all of a sudden I am the responsible sister?  Say it ain't so!   Though I have to say I got a big smile upon learning I may be a little ahead of my sister in the packing arena (that's about all I'll ever be ahead of her in lol).   Of course it should be noted that Laura is so FREAKIN organized it will take her 30 seconds to put her stuff together.  Me, I have to sort thru piles to get my crap done.  That said, I am determined, DETERMINED I tell you to be packed this weekend.  This will be an amazing accomplishment!  And I will take the advice given to me by my cousin in her comment!

We will be linking video to this blog once we start rolling.  I will be adding to "my beautiful sister sleeping" photo collection.  Seriously, I take pictures of her sleeping on EVERY trip.  The girl sleeps like a princess ALWAYS.  One hand gently placed under her cute little chin and the other half of the bed doesn't look like it's been slept in at all (assuming I'm not in the other half).   She nailed me with a retribution photo when we were in San Diego a couple months ago.  Not so princess like for me.  In fact you can almost see my uvula (sp---and it's in the throat) as I snore!

I have really been excited about going to Italy, but I realized the real exciting part is that I'm going with my best friend.  Laura and I could go to Topeka and have a great adventure (though I'm glad we chose Italy).

It's going to be sunny and hot in Boston, but I will not let that distract me from my mission to pack, save for the obligatory taking the dogs to the river for their weekend swim.

One week from today and another journey for the Worcester Sisters begins!

In one week...

,,,,I will probably still be packing.  First trip I have taken where I haven't been packed at least two weeks in advance (I hate to admit it, but Mollie might be ahead of me on this!)  I have not even gone through the "in my head " packing yet.  Yesterday afternoon, it occured to me that I had not seen my passport in at least two years...OK - slight panic ensued, but after about an hour of searching I found it safely tucked away where I would remember where I put it!  Go figure!

I spent last evening sending notes off to confirm our reservations and as luck would have it received responses from all that we are good to go!  Most of them were in Italian - I am assuming that they are thrilled we are coming!  I can not wait to be back in this country that I have fallen in love with and to share it with Mollie.  The fun part of this kind of journey is the exploration of new places and of self.  I always seem to learn a little more about me when I am in a word where I need to attempt to communicate differently.

Certainly more to follow...

il viaggio comenche!

2 weeks from today!!!!

Again, not that we're counting the days but as I looked at the calendar I couldn't help but notice Laura and I  are leaving from New York to Milan two weeks from today! It's a little overwhelming to think about, especially the packing part (though my ever so organized sister is just about done!).  I have at least done some pre-packing in my head.  A notorious "over-packer", I am determined to do this 2 week trip in one large duffle and of course my carry on which shouldn't really count as it is just my electronic equipment and purse.

My biggest concern is shoes!!!  Though I've narrowed it down to my Reebok toner tennies (might as well give my legs and ass a workout while walking, despite the recent consumer report article about people "falling off them" and breaking there ankles or other such injuries!), and a pair of nice night shoes (not to high of a heel---it is cobblestone afterall) and a couple pair of flip-flops.  As for the rest of what I'll be taking that will simply fall in to place I am just sure of it!

Starting to get nervous about leaving my two dogs for this length of time.  They are used to me traveling as I do quite a bit for work, but I've never left them for 14 days.  They will be in good hands however, so I really am just going to be missing them.

We'll be doing a lot of driving, as I told one friend today.  He let me know to be careful because while you won't see much of a police presence there are cameras everywhere and they WILL find you if you commit any kind of infraction.  Probably ought to put a little $$$ in reserve as this is an almost certainty for me.

I'm sure there is a lot more that I could stress out over if I really put my mind to it, but then I remember I will be in Italy with my sister---what could possibly go wrong?

Man does my sister know me

It scares the "shidooby" (thank you Chelsea Handler for that word, sorry about the spelling) out of me.  I cracked up when she said that I would would be packing on the 22nd (one day before our departure).  I didn't even tell her that I was taking that day off TO pack and she STILL knows.  Bless Laura's heart she is constantly doing my "pre-pack" check-in to which I unconvincingly fib and tell her I'm on it!   But she knows me to damn well.  It's a blessing and a curse.

I just am simply in disbelief that this trip is really happening.  It may be our most romantic trip together yet. Laura eluded to the "strange" situations we seem to find ourselves in when we are together.  That's [putting it mildly.  It's like the universe likes to throw us curve balls and enjoys watching how we handle it.

I mentioned "romantic trip" above.  It is hilarious that some if not most of my romantic getaways have been with Laura.  True fact---the first (and only I might add) time I ever slept in a hotel bed with mirrors on the ceiling was with my sister.  Meanwhile, our mother (whom we bring along with us on occasion) was one bed over listening to white noise on her transistor radio---yes I really mean transistor radio.  We were in reno and she couldn't find a station so the sweet sound of static seemed to appease her.  Laura and laughed ourselves to sleep over this situation.  We couldn't help but see the irony that the hotel desk clerk had upgraded us to the penthouse sweet as they encourage women traveling alone to there little town and yep we had our mother with us!  It actually was a blast and mom is a great sport!

We are now just 17 days from take off to Italy and only time will tell if Italy is ready for the Worcester Sisters!   With our luck the Leaning Tower of Pisa will finally fall once we get there.  Just one more memory to add to our adventures together!

27 Days to go (but who's counting?)

My sister has started us off on this blogging thing which should be a blast with the two of us jointly yet independently posting.  She described us very well - how different we are yet still able to connect in a deep way.  What she didn't go into is how these differences get us into strange situations.  I mean really strange.  It has gotten to the point where we just look at each other and ask ourselves "why does this always happen when we are together?"  Can't wait to see what Italy brings us.

We (or I should say I) have been practicing Italian.  I have been listening to the Pimsleur tapes for about 3 years now so I am prepared.  If we need to find Via Valdi in Rome - I am the gal to do it!  The good news is that while I may not be able to speak it fluently - I improve with every glass of wine!

We have the trip fairly well outlined and I for one am thrilled as we are going to places that I have not been before.  We will be heading farther south and into Sorrento taking day trips from there.  The weather should be beautiful (fa bello) during our stay and we will have quite a few days on the coast which will be fun.  Don't ask me which coast, but there definately is water!

I am about to begin the packing process.  For those who know me - this should not seem out of the ordinary.  I am certain that Mollie will begin by say July22nd!  God help us!

I can't wait to take this particular journey with my sister.  We have both been through hell the past couple of years and have lived to tell about it.  I believe that this trip will be one that starts us both on the next paths of our lives......

37 days to go and we're off to Italy

Laura and I are in our official countdown.  We have some plans of where we will be visiting as noted in the previous post, but today, during our daily phone call, we came to the realization it really doesn't matter where we end up, we'll be in ITALY!!  There will be wine!  There will be olive oil!   There will be sunflowers!   And of course we'll be two sisters together on yet another romantic trip!

Stay tuned as we continue the countdown to take-off!

45 day countdown to Italy

Today marks the official count down for the ULTIMATE sister's trip to Italy.  My sis Laura and I (Mollie) have experienced many journeys together.  We make it our goal to meet somewhere every year, just the two of us, as 3,000 miles separates us physically from one another (I live in Boston, Laura in Portland, Or).  We share a very tight bond despite the land between us that keeps us from daily coffee or drinks.  We make up for the obstructing distance by daily phone calls, Skype or emails to keep each other updated.

With this blog we will share our biggest travel adventure together---Italy.  With our posts you, dear readers will be taken along for the ride.  While Laura and I have logged many miles together, this is certain to be a major travel milestone for us.

For those who read this and don't know us, welcome!  Here's a very brief bio:  Laura and I are complete opposites in just about every way---she: very polished, organized and refined; me:  not so much!  I am the complete antithesis of polished, organized and refined.  We are the personification of Yin and Yang, when together we make one whole person, though we both lead very independent lives.  Through our posts you will get to know us better, you will hear each of our voices and my guess it will become apparent to you rather quickly our differences and yet we so often share one voice.

A main theme in any of our travels is laughter, and we expect this to be no different.  We laugh until we cry, it is the best ab workout ever!  When Laura laughs it's orchestral; me--I'm a snorter though not in a Chrissy from Three's Company kinda way.

Our Italian adventure begins July 23rd with us meeting up in at JFK in NY for  our flight to Milan---Laura in First Class, me--Coach, another difference between us :-)  That said she always takes good care of me and I am sure she will be sending drinks back my way.

We will begin our adventure in the Volterra region for the first few days, then on to Sorrento and surrounding areas.   Next stop Rome and the grand finale in Monte Grotto.  Laura has put together a basic itinerary as this is a return trip for her and my first, but for the most part we will just be letting this trip unfold as we go along.

So sit back and enjoy the journey as we all learn together where this will take us!
